Kim Jong-Nam: Killed by his brother to be secured as the leader of North Korea

Kim Jong-Nam: Killed by his brother to be secured as the leader of North Korea

A video released by Japanese broadcaster Fuji TV purportedly confirmed the assassination of Kim Jong-Nam, the half-brother of Kim Jong-Un, the North Korean leader.

After his death, the autopsy revealed that it appears from being poisoned with VX nerve agent, a banned chemical substance classified by the UN as a weapon of mass destruction.

According to the Malaysia's Health Minister, Subramaniam Sathasivam, the poison that killed Kim Jong-Nam was very effective because, within 15 to 20 minutes, he was pronounced dead on his way to the hospital.

He further described how he was killed, as “One of the girls was told to hold a handkerchief on the face of the victim after he'd been sprayed by the other girl.” “She held it there for 10 seconds but she thought the spraying him had been a sort of prank.”

As scientists and working in the medical field for ages, the absorption of only 10mg of  VX nerve gas into the system can be lethal, so I presume that the amount of dose was powerful to affect his respiratory system.

Some people believe that Jong-Nam may have faked his own death but then why an attempt to break into the mortuary?

Kim Jong-Nam's assassins

Intensive investigation and motion cameras which recorded the assassination scene led to the arrest of two female suspects, Dean Thi Huong, 28, from Nam Dinh, Vietnam, and Siti Aishah, an Indonesian national were arrested.

Scientifically a lethal dose of VX leads to dead within 1 or 2 minutes but can delay between 1 and 2 hours depending on the amount of the dose in the victim's system.

It was also reported that Siti Aishah fell sick, possibly owing to contact with the chemical. If this information is accurate then it means she survived the VX poison for over 24 hours while Kim died almost instantly.

The suggestion that VX 'binary' was applied means two-non-toxic compounds occur on the spot. This would be consistent that only one of the two women became ill afterward and vomited.

The reaction of VX nerve gas on the face can lead to a slow and painful death, the reason Jong-Nam was able to report to the airport authorities after the attack.

Testing for VX gas

A sensitive method for determining exposure to the chemical warfare agent VX is analyzing is the red blood cells (RBCs) following treatment with fluoride ion using isotope-dilution gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

The method has been applied to the analysis of RBCs from a laboratory worker accidentally exposed to VX vapor. Detection and quantitation of VX-G were possible in samples taken as late as 27 days following exposure.

The time between skin contact with VX and the onset of symptoms depend on the concentration, the contact part of the body (head, foot), temperature, humidity and the condition of the victim.

Siti Aishah

It is not likely that Kim Jong-Nam's assassin rubbed the deadly neurotoxin with her bare hand before applying the substance on his face. That will be fatal to her too. The shortest distance between her and the victim made her sick.

In reality, if she was badly affected that will lead to stuffiness, a running nose, spasms, constricted pupils (miosis), sweating and vomiting.

It can be ruled out that the women involved protected themselves against the poison by rubbing the hands with an impermeable cream prior the assassination. That kind of creams exist. Skin creams are developed which can even protect against a high dose of VX.

During the Gulf War, pyridostigmine bromide, a reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, was used to prevent the harmful effects of VX. There is no chance of surviving after rubbing VX nerve gas on someone's face with bare hands.

Another method which could have saved Jong-Nam's killer is using the antidote atropine in advance, in combination with diazepam and applying a cream to protect herself.

After what happened and the arrest, the next question is where did they obtain the highly toxic nerve agent to carry out the assassination? The Malaysian police have launched an investigation into how the killers of Kim Jong-Nam had the VX nerve agent.

However, before they find out where the nerve gas came from, we are saying it once again before the Malaysian authorities could possibly find the answer. The chemical was prepared somewhere in the vicinity of the Korean Embassy in Kuala Lumpur or the abode of any of the assassins.

Once there was the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo used the biowarfare agent in Tokyo and now on Kim Jong-Nam. So it is still a matter of time for the next attack because the knowledge and availability of VX-gas underline that conclusion.
